Physical Dependence and Detox

“Without outpatient alcohol detox, I don’t know how I would have recovered. I stubbornly refused to take time off work, but I would never have been able to navigate the withdrawals myself. The regular check-ins with the team ensured I stayed on track and remained safe throughout.”

The use of alcohol and benzodiazepines can lead to the development of physical dependence on these substances. You may experience painful withdrawal symptoms when stopping alcohol and/or benzodiazepines (such as Xanax, Klonopin, or Valium).

For users of alcohol and benzodiazepines the first stage of recovery requires a controlled detoxification process. At Midtown, we understand that many patients can’t take the time away from family or work to do an inpatient detox. Our outpatient detox program will allow you to continue to participate in your day-to-day life and begin the recovery process.

Our care team will be available for you as you get comfortable with the tools of recovery. For an outpatient detox process to be successful, your medical condition needs to be monitored. To be successful over a long period of time, therapy and additional programming is required. Outpatient detox is just the first step in recovery. It is important to remember that outpatient detox is very different from doing it by yourself.

Alcohol And Benzodiazepine Detoxification At Midtown Health and Wellness

The process of outpatient detox at Midtown Health and Wellness consists of 4 steps:

Step 1: Phone Assessment
We will provide a no-cost general health assessment the very first time you contact our clinic.

We’ll discuss whether or not outpatient detox will be appropriate for you. Factors will include the extent of your current use, your physical and mental health, and how conducive your home life is to your recovery.

We’ll also help you understand your insurance coverage and the fees associated with our programs.

Step 2: In-office Assessment and Medical Clearance
At your first appointment, you’ll meet with your treatment team, including the medical doctor, therapists and recovery coaches.

A thorough and comprehensive interview is completed so we can get to know you as a patient. Your medical team will assess your physical and mental health and create a personalized detox plan for you.

Detox may begin as early as your very first visit. Alternatively, when necessary, we will schedule your detox for a suitable time.

Step 3: Detox Begins
The first day of detox will be spent in our office, as this is the most critical time. It is more than likely that you will not feel like working on this day. Your time will be spent meeting with our care team who will monitor your progress and you will also begin talk therapy.

You will visit our outpatient clinic several times during the week to have your vitals checked, get blood tests, participate in counseling or group support, or have your medication monitored.

Every morning you will have a medical check-up check, and we will dispense medications for you to take during the day.

Doctors or nurses will monitor withdrawal symptoms, discomfort levels, and signs of continued recovery. These short visits make it possible for you to keep up your work schedule while staying close to your family throughout the process.

Step 4: Continuing Care and Therapy
After successful detox, a care plan is created to help support your early recovery.

We offer individual and group therapy to help you learn about addiction and transition to a safe, healthy lifestyle.

You may continue to receive care in our facility, or alternatively we will refer you to intensive programs.
