Ultrasounds are safe and painless. The device produces images of the inside of the body by utilizing sound waves. Ultrasound imaging, also known as ultrasound scanning or sonography, uses a small transducer and ultrasound gel applied directly to the skin. High-frequency sound waves are conveyed from the transducer into the body through the gel. The transducer records the sounds which bounce back and a computer uses the sound waves to formulate an image. Ultrasound examinations don’t use ionizing radiation, like with x-rays. Since ultrasound images are taken in real-time, they can illustrate the structures and movements of the body's internal organs in addition to blood flowing through the vessels. Types of ultrasounds include the Carotid Doppler, EKG, and Echocardiogram.

Patients should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for the ultrasound exam. They may need to remove all clothing and jewelry when examining certain body parts. Patient may also be asked to wear a gown during the exam. Preparation for the exam will vary depending on the what the physician is looking for. For some scans the doctor can instruct patients not to eat or drink for up to 12 hours prior to the appointment. For others, patients may be requested to drink up to six glasses of water two hours before the exam and avoid urinating so that the bladder is full when the ultrasound takes place.
