Asthma is a chronic condition of the lungs which presents with inflammation and narrowing of the air passages. People with asthma frequently experience chest tightness, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Usually coughing takes place early in the morning or late at night. When the air passages are swollen and something is inhaled which irritates them, the muscles in the air passages can tighten and become inflamed and breathing can become more difficult. Cells in the airways can also produce a mucus which is thick and further narrows the air passages. When all these reactions stack up, asthma symptoms take place and breathing is extremely problematic.
Normally experienced symptoms of asthma include:
Symptoms can vary from person to person and having symptoms does not guarantee that an individual has asthma. The best way to be sure that asthma is present is to have a lung function test performed by the doctor. Specific substances, called triggers, can cause an asthma attack or flare up. Frequently triggers include:
When dealing with asthma, it is important to cope with symptoms effectively and avoid triggers which can make the condition worse. Regularly, two types of medications are employed to help asthma symptoms either long-term medications and quick-relief or rescue inhalers. The particular types utilized will vary based on the person’s reaction to the medications. Inhalers are frequently used for treating asthma. Some inhalers are meant to be used daily to prevent symptoms from developing while others are meant to be used when symptoms suddenly occur and are particularly severe. Most medications utilized are inhaled corticosteroids. These medications relieve inflammation.
