Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, is a term used to describe symptoms women can experience a few days prior to their menstrual cycle. Lifestyle changes and medications can frequently assist to relieve PMS. However, when symptoms interrupt a woman’s daily life, it is referred to as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS can affect the body, mood, and how the woman acts during the days leading up to the menstrual period. Premenstrual symptoms take place between ovulation and the beginning of menstrual bleeding. Symptoms can vary significantly from cycle to cycle and get worse with high stress.
Common physical symptoms include:
Women who have severe premenstrual mood swings, irritability, depression, or anxiety may have premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD. Symptoms normally diminish within the first 3 days of bleeding. This severe form isn't as common.
If you have moderate to severe symptoms after two or three cycles using home treatment, talk to the doctor about other treatment options. These can include prescriptions for low-estrogen birth control pills and acupuncture sessions. Birth control pills stop ovulation by controlling hormones. This typically leads to lighter periods and can lessen the symptoms of PMS. Regular acupuncture sessions are helpful for balancing female hormone function and the autonomic nervous system. It can be very effective for managing PMS in the long-term. Diets rich in B vitamins and avoiding excessive intake of salt, caffeine, alcohol, and sugar can also help. A variety of herbs and complementary treatments can also help to lessen or relieve PMS.
